His Swagger says it all..

In every occupation, there are bound to be people who stand out, in terms of their ability and the confidence they exude. And I've come to realise that these species of people can also be found at your neighbourhood fruit stall.
Honest to goodness, I was dumbfounded at the sight of that bare-chested uncle. Everyday as I walk home from the MRT station, I will definitely pass by this small fruit stall. Well I don't know if i should even call it a stall. You see, the make-shift stall just includes fruits, a long table and some stools for the uncle and his gang of buddies. The uncle has this gung-ho attitude about him that is quite admirable, actually. So let's just call him Uncle Gung-ho.
Well what really made me look up and notice him was when I was buying some durian with my mum on this fine durian-crave night. As we walked up to the stall, my mum - as always - told me that Uncle Gung-ho never fails to choose the best fruits for her. As we approached, Uncle Gung-ho halted his conversation with his "men", and walked towards us. You could see his "men" standing in a line, watching his every move intensely. They had this look that curiously resembled that of admiration and respect; and Uncle Gung-Ho, himself, seemed to walk with this swagger that was just so confident. His head held high and puffed-out chest. Well, maybe I romanticised it a little. But it honestly did look like it, if only remotely so. Well mum went on to tell him what she wanted. With a sure hand, he started picking the prickly things and tapped them. When it sounded right to him - don't ask me how a good durian sounds like, coz I am curious as hell too - he would chop the shell and with a flick of the wrist, all in one smooth motion, open a crack in the durian to allow us a peek of that creamy golden morsel. Just that look was enough for him to determine the quality of the durian. His sturdy thumbs-up sign was all that was needed for my mum. She did not even bother to have a taste of the durian to see if it was really that good. That was how much she actually trusted his skills. Here I say "skills" because I really do view it as literally a skill to choose quality fruits. Now tell me, how many of you can actually be so sure the fruit it good just by a glimpse of it? This guy is good, I tell you!..
I went home to test out the durians. And by golly, it was really really good. Creamy and sweet, with a touch of bitterness to compliment the taste. Ah... paradise. As we were eating, mum related an incident regarding the fruit stall and my dad. There was once when my dad had a craving for durian too, so he approached the stall despite my mum's warning that durians were not in season, so it couldn't taste that nice. When dad asked about the durians, Uncle Gung-Ho told him that he could have all of what was left - there wasn't much left anyway - for a $10. My dad was about to purchase it, when my mum walked up. When Uncle Gung-Ho realised that they were together, he immediately changed his tone and told my dad not to buy the durians, as they weren't good. It would be mild for me to say that my dad was surprised. He was shocked!.. Then dad exclaimed that the woman standing next to him was his wife, and questioned the uncle on why he changed his tone as soon as he saw my mum. Uncle explained that he only realised that my mum was dad's wife when she walked up to them, and that he would only sell the best to his usual customers. Ah... no wonder mum trusts him so much.
Well, I am definitely pulling me mum along when I intend to buy fruits from him from now onwards. But I have to say that I now truly believe that no matter the job, there is a certain skill involved in doing it. And these skills can be very impressive if practised by the right personm with the right charisma for it. What an eye-opener, I do say.
