The Way Life Goes..

This is late in coming, but better late then never I suppose.
Last tuesday I watched an episode of The Practise on channel 5. Maybe most of you who have cable have already watched that episode light years ago. Still, I want to talk about it. Why? Because somehow or rather, the topic really affected me. Again, as I have said tons of times already, call me emotional, but the show moved me to tears; tears of anguish, frustration, fear and sadness. What was that particular episode about? Let me walk you through it then..

To cut the long story short, it was about a boy accused of murdering a police officer. Apparently, his friend and himself had just stepped out of a building when he heard gun shots. As he was still on parol with a 10pm curfew, and he might have had some coke (cocaine) on him, he freaked out and ran. The murdered officer's wife (also an officer) only managed to catch him running. Pretty soon the poor chap found himself being gunned down by a horde of police officers. Coming to a dead end, he could only surrender himself. But the officers fired at him, only to realise later that the boy did not have a gun on him.
In the hospital, they sealed the room that the boy was in. In there, those officers tortured the poor boy, forcing him to sign a statement to accuse his friend of being the murderer. How did they torture him? Well, they laid some cloth over the boy's gun wound, and started inserting foreign objects into the wound; among these objecs included a torch light. They not only stuck it in, but they really dug it into the wound, twisting the torch light, thus causing immense agony on the boy.
If by now, you are still unmoved by the predicament of the boy, I shall go on further to convince you. For those who are ready to give those officers a good walloping, the story doesn't end here. It only gets worse.
During that time, the lawyers could do nothing to help the boy. They were thrown out of the hospital room, and no judge was willing to sign their petition fighting for the boy's rights. All because the victim was a police officer. The statement obtained through the torture was very much useless, and the District Attorney knew that. So what did they do? They locked up the boy's friend, and managed to coerce him to give a statement pointing out that his wounded friend was the actual shooter. With this statement, he would go scot-free. The 'friend' took that offer of course; it was as he said "every man for himself". So this new testimony was valid in court, since it was deemed as voluntarily given by the witness (aka the wounded boy's friend). The motion to dismiss all charges was denied; meaning that the accused would be brought to trial. This is after the judge had considered the despicable tortures that the police squad had inflicted on the accused. The District Attorney drew a settlement with the accused for 6 months jail sentence instead of going through the whole court process. They knew fairly well that their case was weak; and this proved it. But the accused took the settlement. How could he not?! He would be risking a possible life imprisonment if they lost!..

If after this, you tell me that you are unmoved, that you feel no anger against those filthy police dogs, I have nothing left to say to you.
As much as I know that this is but a show, and not based on a true story; I am very well aware that such things actually happen in reality. Tell me that such things don't happen, and I would call you an ignorant fool. Or maybe you are just plain naive.
What kind of a world are we living in? It all just seems so hopeless. Tennesse Williams once said that "We're all of us guinea pigs in the laboratory of God. Humanity is just a work in progress".
I disagree. Instead, I feel that humanity is on the road to disaster. The harder we try to make use of controls to keep the world in check, the deeper our graves are dug. Who are we to play God? Who are we to decide who should live or die?! But that is the way of life; the life that we will live our whole lives trying to comprehend but failing to do so.
There is no turning back for us. We change cannot the way of life, that is provided we can turn back time. If we were to remove all controls that have been implemented in our lives, the world will turn into total anarchy.
No. There is no turning back.
How then can we change things; make it all better again. Ah, now that is the complexity of the world we live in. There is no way to put things back on the right track. We have already veered way, way off track.
Another quote by Tennessee Williams:
"We all live in a house on fire, no fire department to call; no way out, just the upstairs window to look out of while the fire burns the house down with us trapped, locked in it."
I cannot agree more. This is a very fitting description for the world we are living in. We live in a burning world. A world burning in rage, deceit, greed, lust for power, and the need to survive. We see all the filth of this world, as if watching it all through the open window. We watch it engulf all the good things of this place we live in; and we watch ourselves being swallowed by all this devilry. We can do nothing. We are helpless.
But after all I have said, despite all the satanism that we are aware of, we manage to sweep it all out of our minds. And,
Life Goes On..
