Trapped in a Society We've Created

"We all live in a house on fire, no fire department to call; no way out, just the upstairs window to look out of while the fire burns the house down with us trapped, locked in it " - Tennessee Williams

It's been a while since I last whispered my thoughts to this lonely space. Too much going on around me. Or maybe that is just an excuse. Some part of me worries about how immature my linguistic skills may seem. Another part of me worries about the content I put in this blog may either offend the people involved, who may, by chance read this blog; or perhaps whatever I write may bore the living shit out of everyone.
A large portion of our lives is spent on things that we hope can make us noticed. Of course there are some people who find all means and ways not to be noticed; but the majority of us want to be noticed. Some of us want to be different; some of us want to seem part of the high class individuals whom others will often take notice of.
Why do women put on make-up? Why do men gel up their hair? Why is it that when we are in large groups, we often talk louder and are more obnoxious? The answers to these questions: Truth is that we want to look good; we want the people around us to notice that we look good. And we want to be seen as fitting into society; to seem & feel that we are good enough to fit into this realistic place we call society. It is this thought that gives us the confidence we seek so desperately for.
Still disagree? Well here's one more scenario to show you what I mean. Why is it that so many people can be seen flocking to stands selling mobile phone shells? Why is it that people are willing to part with their money just to have a red, blue, pink, or a horrendously gaudy looking mobile phone shell? Why is it that people willing to part with their money to download the latest mobile ringtones, the various mobile wallpapers? We are all willing to pay for these various forms of customisation, just to show off what we have. We want people to take notice of what we have. We want people to look at these items and immediately know who we are, or how trendy we could be. We buy pretty and obscenely expensive cars, mobile phones, bags, jeans etc etc.. And for what? To show off naturally. Sure we can say that expensive stuff are often better designed and look much more attractive. Hey, I agree whole-heartedly. Why not? It is the truth afterall. But the thing is if we truly do not care how others view us, we would probably be strutting around in our birthday suits without a care in the world. Or maybe for those who want to protect their modesty, they would grab whatever cloth they have and just throw it on. Who cares whether we look out of place or not!
But no. Reality is that man wants to be taken noticed of. We want to fit in with the rest of the world. We want to be seen in a way that is socially acceptable. We want to be like, envied, looked on as a role-model. How tiring it is, knowing that our whole life is spent worrying about something like that. We may not notice our self-conscious attitude, but that is the case afterall. How sad life seems to be sometimes, knowing that whatever we do, we feel a need to seek the approval of the society. The truth is that this is done. And as much as this knowledge leaves a horribly bitter after-taste, I too, am a slave to my own lifestyle. A fact that I cannot change; and one that I would probably never change.
